Acoustic calibration

Spatial requires that every speaker in a Space has predictable loudness. It is important that acoustic calibration is performed on each speaker in a Space to ensure that Spatial Reality can accurately render content.

 

Best practices for measurement

  • We recommend using a good dB meter to measure the loudness of a speaker. The dB meter should be set to a C-weighted slow response setting.
  • The SPL measurement is not taken at a stationery listening position.
  • The measurement is typically take at 12" on-axis in front of the speaker. However, the acoustic calibration measurement position can vary based on the surrounding environment of the speaker (e.g. speaker is occluded by furniture, is located outdoors, or is located really high in ceilings etc.)
  • Each speaker must be acoustically calibrated individually. 
  • SPL target depends on the properties of the Space (acoustic properties, indoor/outdoor, size)
    • Satellite speakers: 80-88dB
    • Subwoofer: 6dB quieter than satellite speakers

 

Specifying acoustic calibration for each speaker using Control

  1. While creating or editing a Space, tap a speaker to view its details.
  2. If acoustic calibration has not been completed, you can see a field that says Uncalibrated. If previous volume adjustments have already been made, this field will say Calibrated and show the adjusted volume.

  3. To adjust the speaker volume, tap the Uncalibrated/Calibrated field. 
  4. Tap the ▶️ / ⏹️  button to play/stop pink noise.

    Note: This pink noise is generated as -20dB RMS at 50% master volume.

  5. Use a dB meter to measure the SPL level, and use the ➕ / ➖ buttons to adjust the speaker volume until you hit the desired SPL target. 
  6. Tap Save to save the acoustic calibration value for that speaker. 
  7. Repeat this for every speaker in your Space.
